St Joseph's — Rhian Sutcliffe

St Joseph's provides adults with intellectual disabilities with opportunities to learn, develop skills and participate fully in the life of their community. I taught Stage in the Making, a weekly creative workshop in which participants design and make props for St Joseph's annual theatre production.

Each year's performance was devised by the students themselves, with storylines inspired by their own ideas, interests and lived experiences. This participant-led approach results in productions that are imaginative, personal and often deeply moving, exploring themes such as friendship, relationships, identity and belonging.

Throughout the course, I introduced students to a wide range of materials and making techniques, including papier-mâché, foam construction, collage, recycled sculpture, textiles and painting. Together we create an array of theatrical props, including puppets, costumes, backdrops and small-scale objects for stop-motion animation and performance.

My role was to create a supportive, collaborative studio environment where every participant can contribute meaningfully. Through conversation, music and carefully adapted tasks, I tailor activities to suit each student's interests, strengths and abilities, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to experience success while working towards a shared creative goal.

The collaborative spirit of Stage in the Making is one of the aspects I valued most. Working alongside the students, tutors, assistants and volunteers to bring each production to life is always a joyful and rewarding experience.
