In 2018 I worked with Bow Arts on a project at a school for children with additional needs. I worked with students from KS3 and KS5 at Greenvale School to explore their maths topic of shape, space and measure through a series of creative workshops.
Working with students with a variety of needs, I encouraged them to explore and experiment with a range of artistic techniques, including stencil making, printmaking, collage, and modelling, during weekly sessions of up to an hour.
Throughout the workshops, I encouraged students to think about key mathematical concepts such as scale and shape. I also supported them in making creative decisions and explaining the reasoning behind their choices.
The project culminated in an exhibition of the students' artwork in the art room, celebrating their creativity and learning.
Testimonies:
“Once class in particular were always very excited when I demonstrated
new techniques, saying ‘wow!’ and chanting ‘yey!’ when it was their
turn.” Rhian Sutcliffe, Lead Artist
“One student said ‘I’m really liking this mono printing’ - this was
something he’d never done before.” Rhian Sutcliffe, Lead Artist
